About the project
The aim of the Digital Library of Arne Novák is to facilitate access to the substantial and very extensive work of prof. Arne Novák (* 2. 3. 1880, † 26. 11. 1939), a literary scientist, critic, historian and essayist, who served, inter alia, as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Rector of the Masaryk University in the 1920s and 1930s.
Content of the Digital Library
Currently, the collection includes digitized material from the resources of the Central Library FF MU (his own monographs, introductions, epilogues and the works they belong to), which are freely accessible pursuant to the Copyright Act. The Digital Library contains complete works, parts of works or individual pages.
- You can view and subsequently download the works in PDF format or browse individual pages directly in your browser. You can also download the works in TXT format.
- Parts of works (such as an introduction) can be viewed and subsequently downloaded in PDF format or displayed in a browser on a page-by-page basis.
- Individual pages can be downloaded in TXT format or as a PNG image after clicking the respective thumbnail.
The text transcript of the work (OCR, Optical Character Recognition) is available in TXT format. Text recognition was performed automatically and the text was not reviewed.
Technical solution and API
There is an OAI-PMH endpoint of all the works in the digital library for metadata sharing in Dublin Core format
Full content of the library (works, parts of works, and pages) is accessible via REST API. Supported GET formats are CSV, JSON and JSONLD.
History of the Digital Library project
In 2009, it was 70 years since the death of Arne Novák and his work became freely available with respect to copyright. The Central Library of the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University decided to convert the available works into digital form in order to facilitate access and attract attention to the important personality of prof. Novák. The application was developed by Ing. Zdeněk Kadlec, Dr., expert guarantee for the project was provided by doc. PhDr. Jiří Kudrnáč, CSc. The copyright issues were addressed by Mgr. Věra Jurmanová Volemanová. The digitization was carried out by the employees and temporary workers of the Central Library FF MU.
In 2020, the Digital Library content was transferred from the original application to the Islandora system under the LINDAT/CLARIAH-CZ project. The Digital Library of Arne Novák is now part of the infrastructure for digital libraries at the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University.
